Short Story Contest

A few weeks ago, Cassandra took part in a local library short story contest. She won a 2nd place in 10-11 years old category. She won herself a $50.00 gift card.
The Night Ride

A slim, straight figure of a 10-year old boy crossed in front of the fire in the small wooden cabin. His fur cap drooped down to one side as the wind blew through the window.
“Nathan, please get on with your chores. Round the cattle, feed the pigs, and fetch some fresh water back here!” Mama called. I hate being the only child. He thought. Nathan do this, Nathan do that, when will it ever stop?
Nathan walked out the only door the cabin had. He headed into the field where the cows were lazily grazing grass.
“Go home, girls!” Nathan sighed, waving his arms. The cows obeyed and slowly trotted towards the gate. He poured the bucket of slop into the pigs’ trough.
Nathan stared out into the prairie. There was only the enormous, empty prairie with the gophers popping their heads out of the ground and the grass blowing in wave of light. There were no boys his age to play with. Their closest neighbor, Dr. Laurie, who was in her 40’s, lived 10 miles from the cabin. Snapping himself back into the world, he ran into the clump of trees towards the creek.
As Nathan was filling up a bucket with water, he spotted a small figure in the distance. Papa was walking towards the cabin with game in his hand. He had just returned from hunting.
Nathan wasn’t surprised at the game Papa had brought. Instead, his mouth dropped open at the sight behind Papa-a white Arabian with its silky mane flying. The fog white horse skidded in front of Nathan, back legs crouching.
“Where’d you get that?” Nathan asked, taking a step back.
“Well, I traded old Bessie Mare for this beauty here,” chuckled Papa. “It’s for you.” Nathan stared dumbstruck at the horse.
“Riding lessons start tomorrow!” exclaimed Papa, leading the horse into the stable.
I can’t ride a horse! Thought Nathan. A picture flashed in his mind. When Nathan was six, he tried to ride a wild horse. The horse flung him off into a ditch and had seriously hurt Nathan’s arm. He never rode a horse again.
The next morning, Papa yanked him out of bed to the meadow.
“Yikes!” Nathan yelled to Papa during their riding lessons, dodging the horse’s kicks. “Forget about riding it!”
They got out of the horse’s range. Nathan sat down, discouraged. “It won’t even give me a nicker.”
“You have to earn the trust of the horse and love it with all your might. Put your best foot forward and you will learn how to ride it in no time.” Papa gave him a pat on the back, and stood up.
After he left, Nathan tried to get closer to the horse. It had calmed down, but Nathan could still scent his fear. A slight snort sent Nathan running.
Everyday that week, Nathan always cowered at the mere sight of the horse. Mama didn’t seem hopeful, but Papa was always encouraging him.
One evening, Papa told Mama and Nathan that he had to go into town to the trade market for a few days.
“Take care of your mother, all right?” Papa said to Nathan as he hitched the cows to the wagon. “Be the man of the family!” Pa went farther and farther away, till the prairies swallowed him up. He disappeared over the horizon.
That night, Nathan was just about to fall asleep when he heard Mama moaning. He rushed over to her. “What’s wrong?” his voice quivered.
“I think I have a really high fever,” Mama whispered, shivering. “I have a very serious headache. Go and get Dr. Laurie.” Mama’s head dropped back down in pain.
Nathan panicked. Ten miles on a horse! He thought. But he had no other choice.
The boy ran to the stable. The horse snorted at him. But this time, Nathan had no time to back up. “We have to go get Dr. Laurie.” He murmured quietly to the horse while he saddled him.
Nathan took a deep breath as the horse stood still. He jumped on the horse and yelled, “Aye-ya!”
The horse bolted out into the night. Nathan breathed in the fresh night air and found out that the ride was exhilarating. Suddenly, the horse swerved right. It was a whiskers length between Nathan’s head and the ground. Nathan’s mind swirled with pictures of the ditch and the injured arm. Then he regained himself and leaned forward, his head touching the horse’s head. “Whoa, boy.”
They rode on in the night. Nathan realized he had conquered his fear of riding, but he had no time to reap over his victory. Mama was still sick!
Soon Nathan spotted a cabin not far in front of them. He slowed the horse down to a trot. He hitched the horse to a nearby tree and banged on the door yelling, “Dr. Laurie! It’s me, Nathan! Mama is really sick!” Dr. Laurie’s face was grim as she opened the door.
“I’ll ride with you. Point the way.” Dr. Laurie said. They rode together back to the cabin.
Mama’s face was so pale, and there were beads of dampness on her forehead. Dr. Laurie attended to Mama.
“She has a bad cold. Let her take this medicine once a day and keep her in bed. She’ll be recovering in a few days.” said Dr. Laurie.
The next three days Nathan took care of Mama attentively. Nathan was relieved when he noticed her fever was gone.
Two days later, when Nathan was doing his chores, he heard a jolly old voice singing a tune. It was Papa!
Mama and Nathan interrupted each other as they told the incident.
“He was so brave. He saved my life that night.” exclaimed Mama. “My Nathan rode on that wild horse!” Papa’s eyes shone proudly as he looked at Nathan.
“I am so proud of you. You are certainly the man of the family now.” Papa ruffled Nathan’s hair.
Nathan was deep in thought. Papa was right. I put my best foot forward and I conquered my fear. He smiled to himself.
